Employees attending a scaffolding erecting and dismantling course

Why do you need Scaffolding Erecting and Dismantling

As stated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, in section8.1, there is a legal responsibility for all employers to ensure the safety of their employees, see below:

"Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees"

Further in the Construction Regulations, it states the following in section 16

"(1) A contractor must appoint a competent person in writing who must ensure that all scaffolding work operations are carried out under his or her supervision and that all scaffold erectors, team leaders and inspectors are competent to carry out their work.

(2) A contractor using access scaffolding must ensure that such scaffolding, when in use, complies with the safety standards incorporated for this purpose into these Regulations under section 44 of the Act.

Notes: a) Scaffolds must comply with SANS 10085"

As you can see the government is pretty clear that there needs to be competent people working with scaffolding, competent meaning they have attended a SAQA aligned unit standard course done by an accredited training provider.

This type of training will follow the exact guidelines set out by SAQA, and the learners will be assessed by a qualified facilitator.

The reason the government is so strict is due to the fact that untrained people, really do not know how to erect scaffolding, and in turn, many serious injuries and deaths are caused by it.

That why we training our beloved employees on the correct way to erect, use and dismantle scaffolds, what might be common sense to you, will most likely not be for the next person. Not everyone understands the law of gravity, center of gravity, the dangers of erecting scaffolds on uneven surfaces, using makeshift solutions to support scaffolds, etc.

Rather be 100% in the clear and training the scaffolding erecting and dismantling employees up properly to ensure that, as an employers, you're not liable for serious injuries and penalties.
