Why do you need safe stacking and storage

Stacking and Storage of goods is an activity that is likely to occur across many different industries and types of workplaces. Most workplaces are likely to involve the stacking and storage of goods in some or other way. It is for this reason that it is an important topic for every employer and employee to delve into.

The concept of safe stacking and storage may seem straightforward and logical but one would be surprised at the number and severity of incidents and accidents caused as a direct result of poor/unsafe methods. Many of these accidents are fatal and could easily have been avoided had the correct training been done and correct procedures been followed.

This course is intended to help employers and employees develop a clear and sound understanding of safe stacking and storage so as to enable them to utilise safe and effective methods and procedures; whilst simultaneously fulfilling obligations under South African health and safety legislation.

The other obvious benefit would be to ensure safety in the workplace, thereby preventing harm, injury and possible death of employees as well as people visiting the site.

Safe stacking procedures and systems are intended to provide safety in the workplace. It would make sense then, that we develop a better understanding of Occupational Health and Safety and its applications in general. Occupational Health and Safety is a discipline that requires the collaboration and participation of both employers and employees.

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act specifies duties for employees, managers, health and safety representatives, health and safety committees, employers, C.E.O.s (16.1), 16.2s etc.

From this we can see that everyone has a part to play in Occupational Health and Safety. It is important that we bear in mind what the consequences of our actions may be, not only for ourselves, but for others as well (co-workers, visitors etc).

Safe Stacking and Storage is an integral part of occupational health and safety, especially in warehouses and factories. Accidents caused from unsafe stacking and storage procedures can easily be avoided by training employees and increasing awareness. There are government regulations that are easily available and are upheld as law by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No 85 of 1993). Making use of these regulations can help guide employers to ensuring safe working procedures as well as legal compliance.

It is not only the responsibility of the employer to ensure that staff are trained; the employee has responsibilities and rights that go beyond this.

Why is compliance important?

Did you know that the majority of accidents in the South African workplace (+/- 70%) are caused by non compliance? This means that employers and employees alike are failing to operate according to regulations and procedures that have been laid out by government and are seen as law. Failure to follow these procedures and guidelines means that you are breaking the law! You are endangering your own life as well as the lives of others (people you work with and people visiting your workplace).

Ensuring that your organisation is compliant according to health and safety legislation will not only prevent injuries, harm, disease and death, but also civil and criminal liability.
