Why do you need dangerous Goods Handling Training

As mentioned in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Section 8,

"Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees." and furthermore in the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations, section 3;

"Information, instruction and training

3. (1) Every employer who undertakes work which is liable to expose an employee to an HCA must, before any employee is exposed or may be exposed, after consultation with the health and safety committee established for that section of the workplace, provide that employee with suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training, as well as thereafter inform, instruct and train that employee at intervals as may be recommended by that health and safety committee"

There is a legal obligation on the employer to ensure that any employee working with chemicals needs to be informed, instructed and trained on the proper use of those chemicals.

This is due to the hazard and risk chemicals are to the human body as well as how certain house chemicals mixed together could create spontaneous combustion, release of toxic gas or become poisonous on contact.

Truth is, most of us do not know just how harmful some of the chemicals we work with are, and that is why we do training, to open our eyes, to understand how chemicals work, how to read and understand the material safety data sheets that come with chemicals, how to properly store them.

Have a look at the video, it shows how easy you can get a chemical reaction between two house hold items, Chlorine and Brake Fluid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1ARsGseHy4

Now yes, some of you might not work with these two chemicals, but truth is, EVERY chemical will react to another chemical, in some sort of way, good or bad.

Imagine a hardware store, or shopping center had these two chemicals stored above or next to each other, on the storefront or back in the warehouse/storeroom and the container was compromised and the two chemical reacted with each other.

Boom...no more shopping center and employer please report to court

Don't wait for the 'boom' , to send your staff on training, do it straight away
