In order to show you why you need to do fire fighting training, besides stating the obvious, "You don't want your workplace to burn down and people to die!", we need to look at a few laws and regulations to help us understand the legal "why?".
The Occupational Health & Safety Act
"Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees."
The National Building Regulations
"17. (1) The Minister may, after 'consultation· with the council make regulations; to be known as national building regulations-
(e) to provide for the requirements. with' which' buildings shall comply in so far as precautionary measures against - fires or other emergencies are concerned,- including the resistance of buildings against the outbreak and spreading of fires,· the protection of the occupants or users of i .• buildings or other persons against fires, the 'aids or other ' installations' to be ; in . buildings" for the combating or ,. prevention of fires and for the vacating of such buildings .'in cases of fires or other emergencies; · ".
SANS 10400: Part T – Fire Protection
In section 4.37 it's speaks of the need to have fire extinguishers in the building and sets out the guidelines for that.
Lastly, we revert back to the OSH Act, Section 8.e
"Providing such information, instructions, training and supervision as may be necessary to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of his employees;"
You are now left with a hazard/risk of fires, you have personal protective equipment in the form of fire extinguishers, and you have the law stating that you need to provide information, instruction, supervision and training to your employees, this is why almost every company in south Africa select an emergency fire response team and send them on Fire Fighting Basic Training, as it ticks all the boxes when it comes to the legislation.
Not convinced yet?
Here is some non-legal "why's" to do fire training, did you know there are 4 different types of fire extinguishers, and let's say you were non-the-wiser and used a water based extinguisher or hose reel on an electrical fire? In other words, the fire was caused by an electrical current still preset when you spray your water based extinguisher / hose reel into it. Water is a very good conductor of electricity, and you're the one holding the other end.
You will be shockingly surprised at how badly the body accepts excessive electrical current.
Or lets say there is an oil fire, in other words a fire caused by burning oil in a kitchen, and you pick up the CO2 extinguisher. Did you know that there is compressed gas inside that extinguisher, and that the contents jet out the nozzle with high force, meaning that the burning oil is going to be sent flying everywhere, and did we mention it's on fire.
Sending yourself or your staff on a proper fire fighting is the best way to go, not only does it tick all the legal boxes, but ticks the knowledge and good practice boxes too.

It is the training up of a team of employees that will fight small fires in the workplace, with the objective to prevent the fire from spreading. They also actively manage and maintain the workplace, to prevent fires, and ensure that good housekeeping is practiced.
